Moscow, August 18, Interfax - Patriarch Alexy II of Moscow and All Russia expressed his condolences to all members of the Taize ecumenical community with the death of its prior Fr. Roger Schutz, 90, killed during divine service on Tuesday.
The Primate of the Russian Church noted in his message of condolence that Fr. Roger’s earthly way ‘had been an example of the life of a Christian who dedicated himself to the ministry to God’.
‘Fr. Roger was known throughout the world as a founder of the Taize community that he led for over 60 years. An inspired preacher and man of prayer, a zealous worker in the field of Christ, he had gained respect everywhere for his tireless aspiration to establish relations of peace and love among Christians and for his preaching Christian ideals to European youth’, - the Patriarch writes.
Alexy II is convinced that ‘the tragic death of Fr. Roger is a great loss for all Christian world’ and prays for the repose of the late Fr. Roger in the heavenly mansions.
Metropolitan Kirill of Smolensk and Kaliningrad writes in his message of condolence that Fr. Roger’s preaching of Christian values to European youth had been the most important part of his activities.
‘The Taize community has become a place of meetings and dialogue for young people. We hope that the cause commenced by Fr. Roger’s will be continued by his followers’, - the Metropolitan wrote in his message to Fr. Alois, the new prior of the community.
