OIC wants Syria to start national dialogue, political settlement

Astana, June 28, Interfax - The Organization of Islamic Cooperation has been following with concern the current unrest in Syria, said OIC Secretary General Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu.

"We advocate national dialogue in Syria and fast reforms, declared by the Syrian government, for the sake of stopping the violence and clashes between the people and law enforcement services," Ihsanoglu told the 38th session of the organization's Foreign Ministers Council in Astana on Tuesday.

"I welcome the democratic change in Tunisia and Egypt as a result of a democratic revolution. I expressed the hope during my recent visits to Tunisia and Egypt that these changes will strengthen law and order, democracy and economic development," he said.

"The OIC advocates a political settlement of the Libyan crisis and recognizes the Libyan people's legitimate demand to restore law and order," he said.
