Moscow, March 2, Interfax - The Russian Foreign Ministry hopes that the burning of a copy of the Quran at a U.S. military base in the Afghan city of Bagram will not trigger mass riots in this country.
"We treat the religious feelings of Muslims with respect and condemn the incident that happened at the American base in Bagram," Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said at a press briefing on Friday.
"We call for measures intended to stop the latest protests from growing into mass riots and acts of violence," Lukashevich said.
The burning of a copy of the Quran at the Bagram base provoked protests and attacks on the authorities across Afghanistan.
"Naturally, this escalation in Afghanistan is a matter of concern," he said.
