No preemptive steps were taken to avoid Kazan tragedy Putin

Moscow, July 19, Interfax - The attempted assassination of the mufti of Tatarstan and the murder of his deputy send a serious message, President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday.

"It's a serious signal. We have on the whole been aware of what's going on in some Russian regions, but being aware is not enough. It is necessary to understand the situation, analyze it and make timely decisions," Putin said at a meeting with the State Duma factions.

"As for the latest tragic incident, we can say that no preemptive steps have been taken," Putin said.

He called on all political forces to carefully analyze the situation and be always guided by the needs of the people while making decisions.
